NATALIE BUSKE THOMAS
What is most striking about this author is her sense of almost childlike wonderment towards a world that is easily considered by most tarnished and gray. Her vision is based in what if’s instead of impossibilities. It has been that dose of her enthusiasm for life that has built her incredible following. Her books start with her imagining how to take technology to the next futuristic level and then following the progression with the potential aftermath of that creation. It turns each book into a roller coaster of thrills for the brain. At the end of the day, her books touch upon loss, controversy, heartache, fascination with exploring technology limits, humor, family and a plot that will keep you invested until the very last second.
Ultimately, her popular detective Serena Wilcox has become an alter ego for Ms. Thomas. She told me that “Serena appeared in the last thread of one of my earlier books. I needed someone in to solve the crime and added her in, not realizing what impact she would have. Everyone loved her, so the Serena series was born.” One of the most interesting facets of this authors approach is her willingness to accept input from her readers. She often includes interactive contests on her web page, where her fans get to vote on what characters should continue on to another book and who should never be heard from again. Another contest allowed readers to submit their pets names and description allowing the winner the fun of having their pet written into her next novel. “I love the idea of the readers driving my books,” she admits, “it’s all about the story.” She did disclose that a new spinoff series was about to start, but did not reveal what character.
Her life has been filled with adventures, she was a tap dance instructor in Germany, has written and directed plays, is an oil painter with paintings displayed across countless exhibits and galleries, has written a newspaper column and for magazines, all in an effort to feed her creative appetite. Despite her successes, she is a wife and mother first and foremost and recalls having to walk away from her first publishing deal, because they wanted her to go on a six month book tour that would have taken her away from her family. An absolute deal breaker for this devoted mom of three. It was during this time in her life that she recognized the need to take control of her own destiny. She’s been driving the bus ever since. Her three children, two daughters and one son, and her husband are her priority and she very fondly describes her husband as her biggest supporter, encouraging her right from the start. This nature lover wants to make a difference in our world and encourages the people she meets in her daily travels to do likewise.
“When I was in the second grade, I had written a story that my teacher had me read to the kindergarten class. The children were spelled bound. I could never forget that feeling of transporting those kids into my story, amazing,” she stated tracing the moment she knew that writing was to be in her future. That kind of encouragement "propelled me towards my goals." Her advice to young writers, “put yourself out there, don’t give up. Push your own vision through and don’t be afraid to fail.” She revealed that when she was a little girl she would imagine that her books would be in the library someday. The day that actually happened, “it was very emotional for me, such a sense of achievement to see a dream come true. Wow I did it.” Her father died at the age of 37 and she remembers his words vividly “You'll be special someday I just know it.” This proclamation has been a driving force in her lifetime pushing her to live up to that legacy. “You never know how much encouragement of a child could do. If you work with kids, make a difference in their lives through positive words.” That sentiment is worth repeating, “you just never know what positive, encouraging words can stir inside a child.” We could not agree more. This is a talented author not to be missed. Check our her collection of Serena mysteries in the book store.
